What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
A calm, step by step look at your first visit: what we ask, what we assess and how your plan comes together.

Booking your first physiotherapy appointment can feel like a big step, especially if you have been living with discomfort for a while. Knowing what happens during the visit can make it easier to walk in feeling prepared.
Before you arrive
- Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move. Shorts or athletic wear work well for hip, knee and ankle concerns.
- Bring your insurance details and a list of any medications.
- If you have relevant reports or imaging results, bring them along.
- Think about what you most want to get back to, such as a sport, a task at work, playing with your kids or sleeping comfortably.
The conversation
Your physiotherapist will start by listening. Expect questions about when your symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, your general health and your daily routine. This conversation shapes everything that follows.
The physical assessment
Next comes a hands on assessment. Your physiotherapist may look at how you move, test strength and flexibility, and gently examine the area of concern. You can ask questions at any point, and you can always say if something feels uncomfortable.
Building your plan
Before you leave, your physiotherapist will explain what they found in plain language and suggest a plan. Plans often combine hands on care, targeted exercises and practical advice, and you will usually leave with a few simple exercises to start at home.
