Manual Lymphatic Drainage: A Gentle Guide

What lymphatic drainage is, who commonly chooses it and what a session feels like.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized hands on technique that uses very light, rhythmic strokes. It works with the lymphatic system, which helps move fluid through the body.

Why people choose MLD

MLD is commonly used for people experiencing swelling, for example after surgery or injury, and many people simply enjoy how calming it feels. Where swelling has a medical cause, MLD should be coordinated with your physician.

What a session feels like

  • The pressure is very light, much lighter than a typical massage.
  • Movements are slow, rhythmic and follow a specific sequence.
  • Many people find it deeply relaxing.

Is it right for everyone?

Not always. Some conditions, such as active infections, untreated blood clots or certain heart and kidney conditions, may require medical clearance or make MLD unsuitable. That is why a careful health history comes first.
