After a Car Accident in Ontario: First Steps for Your Recovery

A practical checklist for the days after a collision, covering medical assessment through to starting rehabilitation.

Even a minor collision can be stressful. In the days that follow, it is common to notice stiffness, aches or headaches, sometimes not until a day or two later. Here are some practical first steps.

1. Get checked by a physician

Have a doctor assess you after any collision, even if you feel fine. Seek emergency care for severe pain, numbness, weakness, confusion or worsening headache.

2. Notify your auto insurer

In Ontario, rehabilitation after a car accident is often supported through the accident benefits portion of your auto insurance. Contact your insurer promptly and keep a note of your claim number and adjuster’s contact details.

3. Stay gently active

Unless advised otherwise by your physician, gentle movement within comfort is generally better than complete rest. A rehabilitation professional can help you find the right balance.

4. Begin rehabilitation

  • Bring your insurance details, claim number and any medical notes.
  • Expect a thorough assessment and a discussion of your goals.
  • Your plan may include physiotherapy, chiropractic care and massage therapy.
